Silent Travelers: Germs, Genes, and the Immigrant Menace

AMAZON - Like new condition, Soft cover, ISBN 801850967, Author: Alan M. Kraut

A history of the relationship between immigration, public health, and prejudice in the United States. The author examines how immigrant communities became associated with disease—from Irish immigrants blamed for cholera in 1832 and Chinese immigrants stigmatized during San Francisco’s 1900 plague outbreak to Haitians associated with AIDS in the 1980s. He explores how fears of contagion and claims of genetic inferiority shaped immigration restrictions, medical care, workplaces, and schools. Combining immigration history with the history of medicine, Kraut also traces immigrants’ responses to American health practices, the work of immigrant physicians, and the creation of hospitals and other community-supported health services. Drawing on government records, photographs, letters, and personal accounts, the book considers both the realities of illness and the use of disease fears to justify exclusion.

LIBRARY – Soft cover, Good condition, ISBN 345425502, Author: Alison Weir

A biography exploring the personal life and character of Queen Elizabeth I within the political world of her reign. Weir examines the queen’s relationships with Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester; her suitors and advisers; and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. Against a background of court intrigue, religious conflict, and war, the book considers Elizabeth’s decision not to marry and the connections between her private feelings and public responsibilities. Drawing on contemporary accounts, Weir seeks to distinguish the woman from the myths surrounding the Virgin Queen.
