**NEW** We Rode the Orphan Trains

Author : Warren, Andrea

Description : A nonfiction history book that recounts the experiences of eight people who, as children, were sent west from eastern U.S. cities aboard “orphan trains.” It also follows Clara Comstock, a Children’s Aid Society agent who accompanied children on many of these journeys. Between 1854 and 1929, charitable organizations—especially the Children’s Aid Society—relocated large numbers of impoverished, abandoned, and orphaned children from New York and other eastern cities to homes in the Midwest and West. The children were presented to prospective families at train stops, where they might be adopted, taken in as foster children, or, in some cases, expected to provide labor. An estimated 200,000 children participated in this movement.
